As a member of an ACPS athletic team, it is the ultimate goal of all that each student-athlete has a positive, injury free and healthy athletic experience. But the reality is there is risk of injury in all sports. In addition, being a member of an “outdoor” sport exposes the participant to the natural elements. ACPS is committed to safe practice and provides a Concussion Protocol and a Heat Management Plan to ensure that on an annual basis, administrators, athletic directors, athletic trainers (ATC), coaches, volunteers, student athletes and their parents are educated about heat illness. It takes all parties working together, to do their part in becoming familiar with the procedures, practices and protocol of Concussions and Heat Management.
The information and links below are provided to assist with that effort.
CONCUSSIONS: In order to participate in any sport with high-risk for concussion student-athletes are required to complete a baseline neurocognitive test (ImPACT) and postural stability testing (BESS) within 10 days of team selection. After a suspected injury, the ATC will re-administer the ImPACT and BESS tests as well as a Graded Concussion Symptom Checklist as a means of monitoring safe progression of return to play. These tests will be given when the athlete reports being symptom free. It is expected all student-athletes return to baseline on these measures prior to return to full practice and competition. They should begin light physical activity under the direction of the ATC, however, prior to being asymptomatic consistent with active recovery protocols.
